Service Above Self, Three Ways

Service Above Self: Inspiration

Mike Endres shared a good reminder as part of his Inspiration on August 13:

"Not everything is cancelled…

Relationships are not cancelled.

Love is not cancelled.

Devotion is not cancelled.

Imagination is not cancelled.

Kindness is not cancelled.

Conversations are not cancelled.

Hope is not cancelled."

So in spite of all that IS cancelled these days, Rotarians can continue to provide relationships, love, devotion, imagination, kindness, conversations and hope as we seek to continue in Service Above Self.

Service Above Self: In Action

Here’s a perfect example of Service Above Self in action this month.  Long-term member Irv Buck celebrated his 86th birthday on August 8.  His wife Kathy put out a request for birthday cards, as Irv loves to receive cards.  As of August 10, Irv has received about 70 cards wishing him a happy birthday!  A joyful way for Rotarians to display Service Above Self.

Service Above Self: In the Future

Mike Oldham reminds us to sign up for the virtual District Conference, coming up on Saturday, August 29.  One of the huge benefits of district conferences is the chance to engage with Rotarians from many local clubs to see how they are responding to the changing circumstances of the pandemic.  Let’s share creative ideas on how we can continue to be in service!

Click here for more information or to register. The registration fee is $22, $20 of which will be credited to our club as a donation to Polio Plus.  You can be reimbursed for the cost of registering as long as you attend the conference!

Free COVID-19 Testing

Hal Gustin reminds us that Douglas County is offering free COVID-19 testing on Tuesday, August 25 at the PACE Center in Parker.  For more information, please go to the Douglas County website at https://www.douglas.co.us/covid19-testing/events/

Thank you, Scott!

Thank you to Scott Gough who arranges for the speakers for our club meetings.  He continues to provide a wide range of fascinating guests, even as our club has moved to the Zoom format.  Our speaker on August 13, Bonnie Wallace, was located in southern California and spoke to us on the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment, which gave women in the US the right to vote.

Be sure to let Scott know if you have an idea for a speaker!

No Picnic

Unfortunately, we are cancelling the Club picnic that had been planned for August 22, due to changes in insurance coverage from Rotary International for events.

Resolved: Rotary Gratitude for the Parker Police Department
Parker Police Chief Jim Tsurapas was our guest speaker at a virtual meeting on July 2.  Chief Tsurapas discussed the status of the department, particularly in light of ongoing demonstrations concerning policing across the nation in response to the death of George Floyd.

The Rotary Club of Parker wishes to express our gratitude for the Police Department of Parker and its ongoing efforts to maintain the highest standards of public service.  The club voted to adopt the attached Resolution that commends Chief Tsurapas and the department.  As the Resolution notes, the "Parker Police Department has long been at the forefront of community-oriented policing and has practiced transparency when dealing with the public and in the implementation of policies that ensure fair and respectful interaction with the citizens it serves."

Please click here to view the entire resolution that was adopted by the members of the club on August 5.
Doing Our Duty

We have set up duty rosters on our website for August, September and October, one month at a time.  Now you can sign up for a meeting task right on the website!

Here is how club members can access the duty rosters:

  • Locate the box on the Home page of the website (www.parkerrotary.org) called Meeting Duty Rosters. It appears immediately below the Welcome to the Rotary Club of Parker.

  • Click on the link for a month to go to that duty roster

  • Once you are on a duty roster, scroll down to the date/task that you wish to sign up for.  You can see if a task is already taken.  To sign up, just click on the Sign Up button on the right side of the task.  You will get a confirming email when your signup is complete.

My thanks to each of you --

Mike Oldham
