Decisions, Decisions…August 13

We have THREE opportunities to serve on Saturday, August 13.  You can probably arrange to help out at two of these events!

Praying Hands Ranch Gardening – 8:00-10:00 a.m.

Our club has had a long relationship with Praying Hands Ranch, which provides equine therapy.  In addition to weeding in the sensory garden that morning, we will get a tour of the facility and learn more about the ranch’s mission.  We particularly want our section of the garden to look nice for any visitors who stop by during the memorial service for Shirley Hanson on August 20.  For more information or to sign up, please click here.

Parker Task Force Food Drive – 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (2-hour shifts)

Our mission is to solicit donations for the food bank at the Stroh Ranch King Soopers.  The task force larder is low on supplies, so this is an important drive.  For more information or to sign up for a shift, please click here.

Parker Brewfest

Our neighboring club, Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club of Parker, is holding its annual fundraiser in O’Brien Park in the afternoon/evening.  They could use some help with registration.  Please contact Alex Doyle (apdhawaii@gmail.com) for more information or to volunteer.

More Service Opportunities Coming Up in August

Harvie Park Open Space Weed Mitigation – Saturday, August 20, 9:00-noon

Our next opportunity to help prepare Parker’s newest open space is coming up.  This time our task is weed mitigation -- clipping or digging out invasive weeds.  For more information and to sign up, click here.

Project CURE -- Monday, August 22, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

We’re back in business to sort medical supplies with Project C.U.R.E. this month.  For more information or to sign up online, click here.

Handing Out Peaches -- Saturday, August 27, 12:00-3:15 p.m.

The peaches and pears arrive on August 27 and we need Rotarians to help hand them out.  Carl Finamore is also looking to borrow 6-8 traffic cones -- please let him know if you can lend some: finamorecr@gmail.com

To volunteer, click here to see the event page.

More on Shelter Box...

We had a terrific presentation on ShelterBox from Rotarian Kathleen Pierz at our July 28 meeting.  Here are some additional resources on ShelterBox that Kathleen passed along:

If anyone wants a raffle ticket for the Colorado quilt, just send me an email with the receipt for your $10 (or more!) donation to ShelterBox, and I’ll fill out a raffle ticket for you.  Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/shelterboxusa

Other News -- August 8
Thank you to the Rotarians who volunteered at the Wine Walk on Friday, July 29 and who weeded at Praying Hands Ranch on Saturday, July 30!  Way to help our community...

Also, thank you to all the Rotarians who have been involved in helping the Afghan refugee family get settled -- finding an apartment and finding work.  We particularly want to recognize Stephen Chismarich, Steve Budnack and Michele Duncan, who helped arrange for a car and all that needs to go with one (registration, insurance, etc.)

Win-Win -- Eat Ice Cream and Meet Rotarians!

There will be an informal ice cream social on Wednesday, August 24 with the noon club (Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club of Parker).  Come between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., buy ice cream at Kilwin's (owned by a Rotarian), then move across the street to O'Brien Park to eat your ice cream and chat with friends!  What a lovely way to spend a summer evening...

Memorial service for Shirley Hanson -- Saturday, August 20

There will be a memorial service for Shirley Hanson, the co-founder of Praying Hands Ranch, on Saturday, August 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Praying Hands Ranch.  For more information or to read her obituary, please click here.

Time to Sign Up -- District Governor's Visit August 31

The District Governor will be visiting all five Area 4 clubs on August 31, 2022.  This will be held at Rocky Vista University in Parker from 5:00-7:00 p.m.  The meeting will be picnic style with hot dogs, brats and buns provided. The University has confirmed that it will be BYOB beer and wine.  In addition, the evening will be potluck for all, so please bring a side dish or dessert to share.   Please click here for a flyer with further details.   Click here to sign up yourself and your guests.

The regular morning meeting on August 25 will be cancelled and replaced by this District Governor's visit.

The Rocky Mountain Santa's Convoy of Toys will also be represented at the Governor's visit.  This organization provides disaster relief for children along the Front Range.  Santa's Convoy of Toys is requesting that members bring a gift card of $10.00 or up from anywhere to help with their work.
