Rotary Student of the Month
Pictured:  Rotarian Jim Muir, Brandy Zink, Madeline and Mark Zink.
The Rotary Club of Parker honored Ponderosa High School student Madeline Zink as our January Student of the Month.  Madeline has been involved in many activities such as National Honour Society, Student Council. Link Crew, Ponderosa Bridge Project and Ponderosa Activities Cabinet Member.  She also has participated in JV Track and Field, JV Tennis and Athletic Training Aid.  Her community service is expansive and includes Ave Maria Carnival, Denver Rescue Mission, Special Olympics Hawaii, Christmas for Kids, Denver Street Pie Collection and Trick or Treat Street for Kids, etc.

Madeline has been accepted to many higher education colleges and universities and is looking to study Kinesiology, Psychology or Military Strategy.  For her career plan she is pursuing military academics and ROTC to jump start a military career in the Air Force or Army.  Congratulations Madeline!
New Membership Proposals
At the January 8 Board of Directors meeting, the following individuals were presented and approved for membership.  Their names are being published for your review.  If you have any objection to either of these men becoming members of the Rotary Club of Parker, please respond in writing to glehrmann@aol.com within seven days.

Dan O’Neill
Dan is a Littleton High School graduate.  He has had a lifetime connection to The United Methodist Church where he worked with pension plans for ministers.  In this capacity, he traveled to many countries around the world.  Through his connection with the UMC, he has a strong understanding of community service and has learned the benefits of providing service to others as well as the need to organize and fund those service efforts.

Dan serves currently as the Chair of the Finance Committee at Parker United Methodist Church. He and wife Debbie live in Pradera where he serves as an at-large board member/secretary for the Pradera Homeowners Association.

Randy Griffith
Randy is a consultant with 35 years of experience in the healthcare industry; he specializes in project management and training in health information technology implementation.  He has also led information technology teams and has managed teams of analysts, both virtual and office-based.  Projects have led him to work for hospitals such as Mount Sinai Health System, Stanford Health Care, MD Anderson Cancer Center, etc.  He recently founded his new company – Data Synergistics.  He is eager to learn more about our community and become an active participant in giving back to others.

Randy and wife Kim Sykes live east of Parker - north of Singing Hills Road.  Kim is working on her first to-be-published-soon book that promotes anti-bullying in schools.
Rotary Club of Parker CHALLENGE

Several members of the Rotary Club of Parker recently attended the State of the State event.  One of the sponsors of the Mental Health and Wellness Expo was giving out materials for Kynd.  Deann and Kam want to CHALLENGE all members, spouses, friends, neighbors, etc. to accept our CHALLENGE by doing an act of Kindness for someone.  Email: kamieb1234@gmail.com and tell about your Act of Kindness. Your name and Act of Kindness will be listed in our weekly newsletter, The Lamplighter.  Then keep doing other acts of kindness and ask those around to do the same and email us about you Act.
Another suggestion is to send a card to someone you think does Acts of Kindness and tell them how much you appreciate them.  Email us to tell us who you sent a note to and why.  We will post these as well.
Let's see how many members we can get to do this and tell about it and see how many others we can get involved!   Thanks Deann and Kam
RCParker Scholarship Update

It's timely to review what the Rotary Club of Parker does with regards to college and vocational scholarships.  We support both Chaparral and Ponderosa High School seniors with 6 (three to each school) $1000.00 scholarships.  The counselors office of both schools will be supplied with applications on or before February 27th. The deadline for completed applications is April 12th, with presentations scheduled for our meeting on May 16th.  I hope Dennis Brewster and Jim Muir are available for that date.  They do such a great job presenting the Student of the Month.  The application will be judged based on the following criteria:

1) Financial need                                20%
2) Extra-Curricular Activities            20%
3) Community Service/Citizenship    25%
4) Grade Point Average                      20%
5) "Service Above Self" Essay           15%

Our Club also offers one $1000.00 scholarship for a student to attend either a Trade School or Vocational School.  That scholarship is also available for a student of either Chaparral or Ponderosa High School and will be available at  the counselors office as well.  Similar dates apply to this scholarship. The judging criteria is the same in points 1 thru 3 but 4) is Career Goals and 5) is "Service Above Self" paragraph.

I must mention that the 3 Ponderosa scholarships are endowed by members Lew Million, Hank Coll and Doc Martin.  A big thank you to those gentlemen!!  And also members Alex Doyle and Hal Gustin have offered to help with the judging.

The Rotary Club of Parker also offers a $3000.00 scholarship through Vocational Services.  I would refer you to Peggy Carter for those details.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Everyday at the Parker Police Department

In an effort to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, the Parker Police Department is now a permanent site for a Medication Collection Box. You can now drop off your unused or expired medications in the front lobby of the Parker Police Department.

The decision to add this service for Parker residents year round was due to the many requests we had for this service and large demand during National Prescription Drug Take Day. We are working in conjunction with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to provide this service. The state funded program expanded with the goal to establish a permanent collection location in every Colorado County. The only cost to the Parker Police Department is the time of the employee(s) assisting with collection duties. The supplies, disposal contractors and collection box itself is at no cost to the department. Thank you CDPHE!

The Medication Collection Box is available to the public during normal business hours, Mon - Fri 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sat – Sun 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Items Not Accepted

  • Chemotherapy and radioactive substances
  • Illicit drugs
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Needles and sharps
  • Pressurized canisters
