Josh Anderson of Respiré Haiti was our speaker on September 17.  He gave us an update on their activities, highlighting the solar power system they installed several years ago that was provided by a Global Grant from Rotary International, spearheaded by our own Mike Oldham.  For more information on Respiré Haiti, click on the calendar link for September 17 on our website or click here

What's Up with Youth?

Kaki Kiebel gave us an update about the activities of the Youth Committee and their developing plans for this school year.  Here are some highlights:

  • They are working to revive the Student of the Month programs at Chaparral and Ponderosa High Schools

  • The status of the existing Interact Clubs at Chaparral High School and Gold Rush Elementary schools for this school year is yet to be worked out.

  • The District hopes to host students for RYLA/Young RYLA in Summer 2021.  For more information on these programs, see the club website at https://parkerrotary.org/page/rotary-youth-leadership-awards-(ryla)

  • The Youth Committee will look into our club hosting a student through the Rotary Youth Exchange program.  Kimberly Armitage described the program to us as our meeting speaker on September 10.  For more information on this program, please visit their website at https://rmrye.org/

Volunteer Opportunity: Providence Cup

John Huffaker offers us a volunteering opportunity to serve as a juror or judge for mock trial competitions between teams of high school students with the Providence Cup!  (To volunteer as a judge, you should be an attorney or law student).   The event takes place on the afternoons of Thursday, October 15; Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17.

This year’s competition is virtual.  That means that volunteers need not travel into downtown Denver to participate, but can participate from the convenience of their home computer room.  The competition is conducted through four rounds in which the teams present one or the other side of an historical case.  There are four time “slots” available; volunteers can sign up for one or more of the time slots.  Each time slot will require two hours and fifteen minutes of your time plus time to score the round.  In addition, you would be required to view an online orientation about the case and how to use the Zoom link.

If you would like more information on the Providence Foundation and Providence Cup competition, check out their website at https://www.theprovidencefoundation.org/the-providence-cup.html.  To sign up, click here to go directly to the online sign-up page.  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/2020providencecupjudge-juror.

When you sign up on the website, please note in the comment box that you are a Rotary Club of Parker member so that we receive a bit of “PR” for our help.

Please contact John Huffaker at dodgerhuff@gmail.com if you have any questions.
