RVU-RCC Provides Warmth for Denver Indian Center
The RVU-RCC Coat Drive for the Denver Indian Center was a resounding success!  Spencer Hill, President of the RVU-RCC and RVU Student Doctor Richard Rodriguea-Brizuela recently delivered over 100 coats plus hats and gloves to the Center.  Spencer stated that the DIC was very grateful and will send a thank you to RVU.  Spencer reflected, "I was grateful to participate in the drive because so many people don't have the simple things like a warm coat like I do.  We were able to help a lot of people with this coat drive."

Thank you to all the Rotarians who donated coats!
Update From Wayne Markel
Mike Oldham shared an e-mail from Wayne Markel, who most of you know was a member of our Club.  Wayne is still a Rotarian and updated Mike on what he has been up to.  Mike thought the rest of the Club might have an interest as well...

Hi Mike,

Good to here from you.  I still get your online newsletter from Kam so I can see you are all still doing great work.

Yes.  We moved to Oregon and are operating the 12 Acres Bed & Breakfast 12acresbb.com.  We well always have room for you as our guest if you can get out to the coast.
I am the cook.

I have been busy with Rotary getting the Peaceful Schools Program up and running at Driftwood Elementary School in Port Orford.

We have a great energetic Rotary Club with over 40 members in this little town of 1100 souls.

We make monthly runs to Medford Oregon to pick up surplus fruit and other food from Harry and David's company.

Here's my newsletter.  Just part of what I have been up to.

David Talbot Home Refurbish Contributions
Mike Oldham received an email (copied to many others in our District) from Candace Talbot, wife of David Talbot of the Mountain Foothills club and founder of Crutches for Africa, requesting contributions to a fund to help refurbish their home so that David, who has been gravely ill, can return home and live there.

Dave (who is a polio survivor on Canadian crutches) and his wife have devoted their lives to collecting crutches, wheel chairs, and other mobility aids, to help crippled persons in many African nations gain mobility and thus improved lives. They have given so much and now they need help.

If you would like to contribute to their fund please go to www.beatool.org/davetalbot to make a tax deductible contribution. Candace advises that any excess funds will be used for Crutches for Africa which they, to their great credit, intend to continue.

If you have questions please contact Mike Oldham.

RI President's Dinner & Polio Plus Fundraiser
January 7, 2017
District 5450 invites you to hear Rotary International President John Germ speak on the 2016-2017 Rotary Theme "Rotary Serving Humanity". In addition Dr. Michel Zaffran, Head of Polio Eradication for the World Health Organization (WHO), will give an update on Polio eradication efforts.
The event will be a fundraiser for the End Polio Now campaign, and all net proceeds from the dinner and additional contributions will be matched $2 to $1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Dress for the evening is business or cocktail attire.

5:30 to 6:30 pm - Reception (cash bar in a spacious hotel setting)
6:30 to 8:30 pm - Dinner and program

District 5450 is asking that everyone make an additional donation to EndPolio when you register for the dinner. (optional) You will be given individual and club credit for your donation.  You can also make a donation to EndPolio at the dinner - please bring cash or check with you to the dinner.
Each person/couple must register individually.  Club members will be seated together at tables with the Club Name prominently displayed.  Thank you for supporting this event and helping Rotary achieve it's number one goal:  End Polio Now!
Please register soon.  This is a really fun evening!  Bring your spouses, friends and guests.  The cost to attend is $65 per person.  We have some money in our budget to help with the cost for our Active Rotarian's in our club but it will not cover the entire cost.  It will depend on who many attend.

If you decide to register, please remember to put the Rotary Club of Parker on your registration.  It's an easy drive for us and it SOLD OUT last year, so asap.

Innovations at Sky Ridge
Sky Ridge is the first hospital in South Metro Denver to acquire and use the SPiN Thoracic Navigation System by Veran Medical Technologies. This system provides doctors with the ability to detect small lung lesions in earlier stages of cancer and with early detection survival rates increase from 15% (Stage IV) to as high as 92% (Stage I).   "Early detection of lung cancer is so important. The earlier the diagnosis, the more time and options we have for treatment. Veran's new technology will help us detect lung cancer earlier, requires fewer hospital visits and will improve patient outcomes," said Dr. Surit Sharma, a pulmonologist, critical care physician and Medical Staff President at Sky Ridge Medical Center.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, killing more Americans each year than breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers combined.  Most lung cancer is not detected until patients are symptomatic and see a doctor.  Typically, by the time symptoms appear, the cancer has spread and is considered late stage.  The SPiN Thoracic Navigation System is the only system in the world that allows doctors to accurately access small lung lesions via multiple approaches. This assists doctors in detecting lung cancer earlier and without the need for multiple hospital visits for diagnostic procedures.  For more information, please call the Sky Ridge Cancer Care Line at 720-225-2273.
